TOURNAMENT HISTORY:
The Miami Masters is a tennis tournament held each year in Key Biscayne (Key Biscayne), the Miami-Dade County Florida. Masters is the second of the season for men and a Tier I event in the women's tour.
is one of the most important tournaments of the season, and the proof is that it is one of the few (besides the Grand Slams) that have a fixture for more than 64 players, and extends the duration of one week. 96 men and 96 women took part in individual mode, and 32 couples compete for the doubles tournament, over 12 days of competition.
Founded in 1985, the tournament was originally called International United Lipton the Players Championships. In 2000, the sponsor change brought with it a new name for the event, which was renamed the Ericsson Open . Since 2002, the tournament was named after NASDAQ-100 Open until 2007, when Sony Ericsson, also chief sponsor of the WTA, rename the tournament now called Sony Ericsson Open . However, the media often refer to it simply as Key Bisco ayne-in English or Key Biscayne.
Due to the prestige and history of the tournament, and the fact that there are male and female competition, many consider the Miami Masters event as the sixth largest in the tours of the ATP and WTA, after the four Grand Slams and the Tennis Masters Cup to be played at the end of the season.
